OUT There at the San Juan Island National Historical Park

Through this project, organized by Northwest Youth Corps (NYC) and its Puget Sound partners — the San Juan Island National Historical Park and OUT There Adventures — ten young people, who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender (“queer”), and two crewleaders, will expand access to outdoor recreation for the approximately 260,000 annual visitors at the San Juan Island National Historical Park, located three hours north of Seattle. Participants will be 16-18 years of age, and carry out needed conservation projects at the Park such as butterfly habitat enhancement, prairie restoration, trail and fence building and campground enhancement. Youth will also improve their skills in problem-solving, dependability, goal-setting, and leadership; and be introduced to related careers at the National Park Service. For his or her service, each successful participant will earn a non-taxed stipend of $1,250 (plus bonuses of $50/week) in addition to academic credit.
