The Spark 2020 Leadership Retreat will bring together stakeholders of the Outdoor JEDI community to connect, network and share their resources. We had SO MUCH FUN last year with our pals at @outwardboundcalifornia on our partner queer teen backpacking course. This summer we’re back at it again with not one but TWO amazing OB programs! First one kicks off with summer in Oregon with @nwoutwardbound where we’ll spend some sunny days on the river and then hangout in Portland for Pride! After you’ve worked out your upper body, round out your summer with some backpacking in Yosemite and absorb tons of great queer history as we navigate San Fran! Today we want to recognize the work of @teresabaker11 with African American in Nature & Parks Experience, the Women’s Outdoor Summit for Empowerment and the @outdoorceopledge. The outdoor industry mirrors society at large through its creation and perpetuation of systems of oppression. Its history is built upon exclusivity and bias imbued with power. It is well past time the industry at large not only come to fully understand this history, but do the work of undoing the systemic oppression it both knowingly and unknowingly perpetuates. At the end of the @outdoorretailer Snow Show last week, @camberoutdoors announced their relaunch of their CEO pledge that had previously focused on increasing representation of women in the industry. The repackaging of the @outdoorceopledge with no recognition or authentic support of Teresa’s work is yet again another example of the long history of gaslighting, erasure, co-opting and much more of women of color (as well as BIPOC, queer folks, folks with disabilities seen or unseen, fat folks and more). While the intention of Camber’s actions may not have been born out of pure malice, the impact has been immense and it is this impact that needs to be recognized, unpacked and atoned for. We as an industry MUST do better. Those of us with social privileges MUST understand ourselves and our impacts better. Gone must go the days in which we can only say, “sorry” with no real repercussions or work to do better next time. Yes, we are all flawed and yes we still need to hold compassion, but it is our (I’m talking to you white, able bodied, straight cis men and women) work to take a long and painful look in the mirror in service of owning who we are and what we need to do to JUST BE BETTER. We encourage everyone to follow Teresa’s work, check out the CEO Diversity Pledge, and hold yourself and others to a higher standard. Do not ask folks with marginalized identities to unpack this work for you. Do not wait for someone else to come along and show you the way. JUST DO BETTER. #IStandWithTeresaBaker
